Little Krishna and His Playful Mischief

We’ve all heard stories of Lord Krishna’s divine greatness—but what makes him even more lovable are the stories from his childhood, when he was just a mischievous little boy in the village of Gokul.

When Krishna was around six years old, he was always up to something. Along with his group of close friends, he would sneak into the homes of villagers to steal makhan (butter), which was his absolute favorite. They would climb up, break the hanging matkis (earthen pots), and enjoy their spoils like it was a grand adventure.

But the fun didn’t stop there. Krishna and his friends would sometimes playfully break the pots of water the Gopis carried on their heads, just to tease them. The Gopis, both frustrated and amused, would go straight to Yashoda Maa to complain:
“Your Kanha is at it again!”

Yashoda would try to scold him, but how could anyone stay angry at that innocent face with those big, playful eyes?

One day, Krishna was caught red-handed with his hand in a pot of butter. This time, Yashoda Maa had had enough. In a moment of playful discipline, she tied him to a heavy wooden mortar, hoping it would keep him still. But little Krishna, being who he was, simply dragged the mortar along as he went about, completely unfazed.

In another sweet incident, Krishna was returning after one of his usual butter adventures. His elder brother, Balram, saw him and tried to stop him, asking,
“Where are you going now, Kanha?”
But Krishna just smiled and walked away.

Curious, Balram followed him, and what he saw melted his heart. There was Krishna, sitting under a tree, happily sharing the stolen butter with a group of monkeys. It was never just about the butter. For Krishna, joy was found in sharing, in friendship, and in simple acts of love.

These stories remind us that even the Divine, in his childhood, delighted in life’s little moments—teaching us that mischief can be sweet, especially when it’s done with a pure heart.
